The Basketball Diaries is a 1995 American drama film directed by Scott Kalvert, based on the autobiographical book of the same name by Jim Carroll. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio in his film debut as Carroll. The cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Lorraine Bracco, Diane Lane and Michael Imperioli.Jim Carroll (Leonardo DiCaprio), a promising high school basketball player living in poverty-stricken New York City in 1972, begins keeping a diary of sorts after he meets up with his middle-aged classmate Bobby (Bobby Shafran). A short time later, Bobby dies from cancer and this event leads to Jim's mental state deteriorating rapidly. He eventually stops going to school and instead roams the streets, taking drugs and associating with criminals such as the local dealer Stanley Boyer (Marlon Wayans) and his girlfriend Marion Silver (played by a then-unknown Cameron Diaz in her film debut). Carroll's mother (Diane Lane) soon realizes that something is seriously wrong with her son and sends him to rehab. After his release, Jim is given a second chance at life when he is accepted into New York University on a basketball scholarship.During his freshman year, Jim's coach (David Morse) notices his erratic behavior and throws him off the team after he punches an opposing player during a championship game. Coach then gives Jim the opportunity to play on the junior varsity team, where he eventually makes the starting five. Soon after Jim's first game, Coach's son Tyler (played by Michael Imperioli) asks him for a job. Jim agrees to work as Tyler's assistant, but warns him about the criminal activity on the team and subsequently destroys his chances at being chosen for future varsity teams.After another basketball practice, Jim is arrested by police officers for vandalizing a local convenience store with graffiti. When he is released from jail, Jim meets up with Marion Silver again, who later gives him injections of heroin which help ease his pain after being shunned by his classmates. One day, Jim is confronted by Marion with a dilemma: she tells him that she is pregnant and wants money for an abortion. Jim sneaks into the locker room at school and steals the money from his teammates' lockers. He gives Marion the money, but without her knowledge, he keeps some of it for himself.At school, Jim finds out he cannot attend graduation because he has too many absences to make up. After looking through his diary looking for answers, he finds out that due to all of his absences he will be expelled unless he passes English to graduate. After failing his first English class, he talks to Coach and asks for help; the coach gets him into the dean's list and Jim makes it to graduation after passing English. He is given a diploma and an honorary doctorate by his coach, who tells him to "get out there and take advantage of your talent".After finally graduating from New York University, Jim returns home only to find that his mother has died. His grandmother (Stefanie Powers) tells him the story of how the son of an African-American garbage collector named James Carroll moved from Brooklyn to Miami and decided to change his surname to DiCaprio.
